‘How many sessions will I need?’ is one of the first questions almost every client asks — and it’s the right question. You want to know what you’re committing to before you start, and you deserve a straight answer. Here it is.
The Short Answer
For most people, treating most body areas, a course of 6 to 8 sessions is the standard recommendation. Sessions are typically spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart, meaning a full course takes roughly 6 to 12 months from start to finish. After that, many people need little or no further treatment. Some have the occasional maintenance session once a year or so. A small number need ongoing management.
We know that’s not a single number. Here’s why — and why the nuance matters.
Why Hair Growth Cycles Mean You Need Multiple Sessions
Every hair follicle on your body goes through a cycle with three phases: the active growth phase (anagen), the transition phase (catagen), and the resting phase (telogen). IPL is most effective during the anagen phase, when the follicle is actively producing hair and has a strong connection to the melanin-rich root that absorbs the light energy.
The problem is that not all your follicles are in the same phase at the same time. On any given day, roughly only 20-30% of follicles in an area may be in the anagen phase. This means that a single session — no matter how good the technology — can only target a fraction of the hair in the area. Each subsequent session catches more follicles in their active phase, progressively reducing the total amount of hair.
This is biology, not a sales tactic for more sessions. It’s true of every IPL and laser system on the market.
How Many Sessions by Body Area?
Different body areas have different hair growth cycles, which affects how many sessions are needed:
Underarms: Often among the best responders. 4-6 sessions can produce dramatic results for many clients.
Legs: Typically 6-8 sessions for good reduction. The large surface area means individual sessions take longer, but results are usually very satisfying.
Bikini and intimate areas: 6-8 sessions is standard. The hair growth cycle here can be slightly variable, so allow for the full course.
Upper lip and chin: Often 8 or more sessions, as facial hair has a longer growth cycle and can be influenced by hormonal factors. Maintenance sessions are more likely to be needed over time in this area.
Back and chest: 6-8 sessions for most clients.
These are averages. Your individual response will depend on your hair colour, density, skin tone, and any underlying hormonal factors.
What Will I Actually See After Each Session?
After your first session, you may notice some treated hairs falling out over the following 1-3 weeks — this is a good sign. You might also notice that regrowth in the area is slightly thinner or patchier. By sessions 3-4, most clients see a noticeable and meaningful reduction. By sessions 6-8, the majority of clients have achieved the bulk of their long-term results.
We review your progress at every appointment. If we think you’re on track, we’ll say so. If an area is responding particularly well — or particularly slowly — we’ll tell you that too, and adjust the plan accordingly.
What Affects How Well It Works?
The factors that most influence how many sessions you need and how good your results will be:
- Hair and skin colour contrast: Dark hair on fair to medium skin = best results. The greater the contrast, the more efficiently the follicle absorbs the energy.
- Hair thickness: Coarser, thicker hair typically responds faster than fine hair.
- Hormonal factors: PCOS and other hormonal conditions can mean you need more sessions and more ongoing maintenance.
- Medications: Some drugs affect skin sensitivity and treatment effectiveness — always disclose these at consultation.
- Compliance with aftercare: Avoiding sun exposure, not waxing between sessions, and following our guidance all make a difference to results.
Is the Result Permanent?
The technically accurate term is ‘long-lasting hair reduction’ rather than permanent removal, and this is the language used by regulators. For most people, the reduction achieved after a full course is so significant — typically 80-90% — that it feels permanent in practical terms. Hair that does return is usually finer, lighter, and much easier to manage.
Some clients go 5, 10, or even 15 years without needing to revisit an area. Others have an occasional top-up session every year or two. We’ll give you an honest estimate at consultation based on your individual profile — we’d rather set realistic expectations and exceed them than over-promise and disappoint.
