Your Local Alternative to Brighton’s Busy Clinics
If you’ve been searching for professional IPL or laser hair removal in Mid Sussex, you’ve probably noticed that most clinics seem to be either in Brighton city centre — with all the parking headaches that entails — or part of a large, impersonal chain. Brighton Bodyworks is something different: a highly regarded independent clinic based right in the heart of Hassocks, serving clients from Burgess Hill, Haywards Heath, Hurstpierpoint, Ditchling, Lewes, and all across the surrounding area.
Here, you’re treated by Amy, a qualified and experienced therapist — not a rotating roster of staff. You get consistent care, genuine expertise, and a calm, unhurried environment that makes a real difference when you’re trusting someone with a treatment on your skin.
Medical-Grade Technology — The Same Used by the NHS
Not all IPL machines are created equal. There is an enormous difference between the consumer-grade devices sold online and the clinical equipment used in professional settings. At Brighton Bodyworks, we use the Lynton Excelight® — an award-winning IPL platform that is supplied to NHS clinics across the UK. It’s the kind of machine you’d expect to find in a hospital dermatology department, not a high street beauty salon.
Why does this matter? The Excelight delivers consistent, precisely controlled pulses of light, ensuring that every treatment is both effective and safe. Its DynamicReflex™ technology automatically adjusts treatment parameters in real time, minimising discomfort and reducing the risk of side effects. This means better results and a more comfortable experience than you’d typically get from cheaper equipment.
We’re proud to offer NHS-level technology in a local, accessible setting — and we believe you shouldn’t have to travel to a hospital or a big city clinic to access it.
How IPL Hair Removal Works
IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light. The treatment works by emitting carefully calibrated pulses of broad-spectrum light that are absorbed by the melanin — the pigment — in your hair follicles. This light energy converts to heat, which disrupts the follicle’s ability to grow hair. Over a course of sessions, the follicles become progressively less active, leading to long-lasting — and in many cases permanent — hair reduction.
It’s worth understanding that hair grows in cycles, and IPL is most effective during the active growth phase (called the anagen phase). Because not all follicles are in this phase at the same time, multiple sessions are needed to treat the full population of hair in any given area. This is why we recommend a course of 6 to 8 treatments, spaced around 4 to 6 weeks apart.
What Does It Feel Like?
Most clients describe IPL as feeling like a warm snap of an elastic band — a brief, mild sensation that’s very tolerable. The Excelight’s DynamicReflex™ system helps significantly with comfort, and the vast majority of people find the treatment much more manageable than they expected. Sensitive areas (such as the bikini line or upper lip) may feel slightly more noticeable, but nothing that requires any numbing or special preparation for most people.
Who Is IPL Suitable For?
IPL works best for people with light to medium skin tones and naturally dark hair — the contrast between hair colour and skin tone allows the light to target the follicle precisely. If you have fair or olive skin with dark brown or black hair, you’re likely to be an excellent candidate.
People with blonde, red, grey, or white hair typically see less benefit, as these hair colours contain less melanin for the light to target. IPL also requires extra caution on darker skin tones, as higher levels of skin melanin can increase the risk of pigmentation changes.
The best way to know if IPL is right for you is simply to come in for a consultation. We’ll assess your skin and hair type, discuss your goals, carry out a patch test, and give you an honest picture of what to expect. There’s no pressure and no obligation.
What Areas Can Be Treated?
We treat virtually all areas of the body, including:
- Legs (full or half leg)
- Underarms
- Bikini line, extended bikini, and Hollywood
- Arms
- Back and shoulders
- Chest and abdomen
- Face — including upper lip, chin, jawline, and sideburns
- Neck
Treatment times vary depending on the area — underarms can be done in a few minutes, while full legs take longer. We’ll talk through everything at your initial consultation so there are no surprises.
What Happens at Your First Appointment?
Your journey with us begins with a £30 consultation and patch test. During this appointment, Amy will take a full skin and health history, assess your suitability for treatment, and perform a patch test on a small area of the skin you’d like to treat. The patch test is a critical safety step — it ensures your skin responds well to the treatment before we proceed with a full session.
This £30 fee is fully redeemable against your first treatment, so it’s essentially free when you go ahead. We do ask that you wait 24-48 hours after the patch test before beginning treatment, to allow time to observe how your skin responds.
If everything looks good, we’ll book your first full session and talk through your personalised treatment plan — including the number of sessions recommended for your area, how far apart they should be spaced, and what to do (and avoid) between appointments.
