Headaches are one of the most common complaints we see at Brighton Bodyworks — and they’re also one of the most frequently misunderstood. Many of our clients have tried everything: painkillers, physiotherapy, chiropractic, even Botox injections. Yet the headaches keep coming back.
The reason? In a significant number of cases, the real cause is sitting quietly in the jaw.
The Jaw-Head Connection
The temporomandibular joint — your jaw joint — sits just in front of each ear. It shares nerve pathways and muscular connections with the head, neck, shoulders and even the lower back. When the muscles around the jaw are chronically tight (as they often are in people who grind their teeth, clench under stress, or have poor posture), they create referred pain patterns that travel upwards into the skull, temples and forehead.
This is why so many people with undiagnosed TMJ disorder experience:
- Tension headaches, particularly across the forehead or at the temples
- Migraines that don’t fully respond to medication
- Pain behind the eyes
- Aching around the ears or a ‘full’ sensation in the ears
- Neck stiffness and shoulder tension that accompanies every headache
- Sensitivity to light or noise during headache episodes
Often these clients have been told their headaches are ‘stress related’, which is partially true — but the stress has a very specific physical expression in the jaw, and that physical tension is what needs to be addressed.
How TMJ Massage Breaks the Cycle
At Brighton Bodyworks, our approach to jaw-related headaches is thorough and clinical. Treatment begins with a detailed assessment, looking at jaw range of motion, posture, and the pattern of your symptoms.
We then work through a sequence designed to systematically release the tension driving your headaches:
- Upper back and shoulder release — these muscles directly feed tension up into the jaw and skull
- Deep neck work — the suboccipital muscles at the base of the skull are frequent headache triggers
- External jaw massage — targeting the masseter, temporalis and pterygoid muscles
- Buccal / intraoral techniques — the deepest release, working on the inside of the jaw
- Scalp and cranial massage — calming the nervous system and addressing referred pain
For many clients, the relief is immediate and profound. Others find that a course of treatments is needed to fully resolve a long-standing pattern — particularly where there has been years of grinding or clenching.
