Which Body Areas Can You Treat with IPL Hair Removal? A Complete Guide

One of the most common questions we get at Brighton Bodyworks is: ‘Can you treat [area]?’ The short answer is: almost certainly yes. Our Lynton Excelight® IPL system is versatile enough to treat virtually any part of the body. Here’s a rundown of the most popular treatment areas, what to expect, and how many sessions you’re likely to need.

Every client is different, and the guidance below is intended as a general overview. At your consultation, Amy will give you a personalised treatment plan based on your specific hair growth, skin type, and goals.

Legs

Full and half-leg IPL is one of our most popular treatments. For many women — and an increasing number of men — getting rid of the daily or weekly shaving routine on the legs is one of the most liberating things IPL can offer. Leg hair is often a good candidate for IPL because it’s typically dark and grows on light skin.

A full-leg session takes approximately 45-60 minutes per session. Most clients see significant reduction after 4-6 sessions, though we usually recommend a course of 6-8 for optimal long-term results. After a full course, the majority of clients find they go months without any need to shave.

Underarms

Underarm IPL is one of the quickest treatments we offer — each session takes only a few minutes — and it’s often described by clients as a game-changer. The underarm is an ideal treatment area because the hair is typically dark and the skin is generally lighter, giving IPL the contrast it needs to work effectively.

Underarms usually respond very well, and many clients see dramatic reduction from as few as 4-6 sessions. Because it’s a small area, it’s also one of the more affordable treatments per session.

Bikini Line and Intimate Areas

We offer a full range of bikini treatments, from a standard bikini line (tidying the edges to match swimwear) all the way to an extended bikini and Hollywood (full removal). These treatments are entirely private and professional, and Amy’s warm approach puts clients completely at ease.

The bikini and intimate area can be slightly more sensitive than legs or underarms, but the DynamicReflex™ technology on our Lynton Excelight helps to keep discomfort to a minimum. Most clients find it very manageable. Plan for 6-8 sessions for this area, as the hair growth cycles here can be slightly more variable.

Facial Hair

Unwanted facial hair is one of the most emotionally significant concerns many of our clients come to us with — and it’s one where IPL can make a genuinely transformative difference. We treat the upper lip, chin, jawline, sideburns, and neck.

Facial hair requires some additional considerations. Because facial hair can be influenced by hormonal factors — particularly in women — results can vary, and maintenance sessions may be needed over time. If you have a condition like PCOS, we’ll discuss realistic expectations at your consultation. That said, many clients see excellent results and find that regular waxing, threading, or bleaching becomes a thing of the past.

Facial sessions are quick — an upper lip takes just a few minutes — and the small treatment area means the cost is very manageable.

Arms

Both full and lower arm treatments are popular, particularly among clients who are self-conscious about dark arm hair or who simply don’t want the hassle of regular maintenance. The arm responds well to IPL in most cases, and treatment is straightforward. A full-arm session takes around 20-30 minutes.

Back and Shoulders

Back and shoulder IPL is one of the most requested treatments among our male clients — though women with darker back or shoulder hair also seek it out. This can be a larger area to treat, so sessions take longer (typically 45-60 minutes for a full back), but the results can be life-changing for people who’ve felt self-conscious about it for years.

Chest and Abdomen

Chest and abdominal hair removal is another popular treatment for men, and can also be requested by women who have concerns about hair in these areas. We treat the full chest, lower chest, and stomach. Treatment time is typically 20-40 minutes depending on the area.

What to Know Before Any Treatment Area

A few things apply to all body areas regardless of where you’re being treated:

  • You must shave (not wax or epilate) the area 24-48 hours before your session, so the hair is short but the follicle is intact.
  • Avoid sun exposure on the treatment area for 4 weeks before and after each session. This is important for safety.
  • No fake tan or tanning products on the area before treatment.
  • Some medications affect your suitability — we’ll cover this at consultation.
  • Allow 4-6 weeks between sessions to align with hair growth cycles.

All treatments begin with a consultation and patch test (£30, redeemable against your first treatment). This ensures we can treat you safely and set realistic expectations before you commit to a course.
